The biggest weight threat seems to be weight gain menopause and all the other changes surrounding "the change." I personally haven't gone through the change, but I know a ton of women that have.
I've seen their bodies morph from youthful to granny. I've seen them starve themselves and still struggle with not being able to keep their weight under control. It's a shame.
But I've also seen women that keep their figures looking great. More importantly, I've seen them keep their energy, their flexibility, their strength...their health.
From what I've seen and read, success is a four pronged approach.
Number one - you must increase your muscle mass. You'll need to lift weights. This isn't a cure all solution but a very important piece of the puzzle. Strengthen your ability to lift, balance, and reach (flexibility.)
Number two - you must keep your body active. You don't have to run every day, but you do need to keep your body moving. Make it a point to walk with your husband or friend every day. Clean your own house. Do yard work. Go shopping. Just keep moving.
Number three - eat real food 90% of the time. You can still have treats, but if it's not identifiable from it's original source (for example - apple versus apple fritter) then limit how much you eat of it. Try to eat real food for every meal. It will make a huge difference in your health and weight.
Number four - you may need to look into hormonal replacement or chemically figuring out what is going on in your body. You may have issues with stress hormones, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, or just mood issues. Some of these will get better with diet and exercise changes, but not all of them will. This is worth reading up on and getting the best possible care.
Focus on keeping your health and your weight will follow suit. Menopause doesn't have to mean the end of a good figure. It might just be the push you need to get in the best shape of your life.
